P_public, is αn international meeting concerning public space, held the last two years, with great success, in the city of Chania. P_public is organized voluntarily by a group of young architects, members of the Architects Association of Chania, with the intention to promote the work of young professionals.
This four-day festival, aims to reactivate the city of Chania and moreover to place ideas like volunteering, interaction, culture, open public space and private space, open to discussion.
Its basic core consists of a two-day conference, hosted at the Centre for Mediterranean Architecture, where young architects, creative and voluntary groups from all over Greece and Europe, present projects, studies and proposals on the improvement and better use of public space.
Along with the meeting, a variety of cultural events (music, theater, games, installations, bike rides etc.) held on public places, complement the architectural proposals and transform the discussions into a living experience.
Emphasizing on the use of unformed open spaces and alternative use of existing public places, a series of exhibitions, events and installations are carried out in many different parts of the city. The goal is to change the way people use and understand the natural and urban landscape, while rediscovering the city.
Under p_public, with support from the Municipality of Chania, the Port Fund, the 28th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, the KE’ Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, public places like the Mocenigo rampart, the Venetian temple of St. Irene, the temple of San Rocco, the underground Turkish fountain of Splantzia, were reopened, cleaned, made visitable for the public and converted into places of culture and art.
The conference and events are admission free.
Within the overall reformation of life and economy in Greece, we consider significantly crucial to improve the appearance and function of our cities, so that, they will not only provide a pleasant environment for residents, but a memorable image for visitors as well.
Furthermore, after the two-year success, we wish to establish this festival as an annual meeting and to designate the Centre for Mediterranean Architecture as a platform for communication and exchange of ideas, at a national and European level.
